Review: “Toy Story of Terror!” Blu-ray

“Toy Story of Terror!” is available today (August 19, 2014) on Blu-ray, DVD and DMA (Disney Movies Anywhere). First seen on network television last fall, the Blu-ray release is available at a perfect time. It will give you a number of opportunities to watch it leading up to Halloween, and because of the Bonus Features (more on them below), it should allow for a good amount of replay-ability for your entire family.

COMBAT CARL, JESSIE

So, what do you get for the purchase? Is it better than what you’ll find on TV? The answer to the second question is a resounding “Yes!” (it’s the same answer for both actually, but more on the first question later). It looks far superior to the television version. In fact, as you would expect from a Disney-Pixar release, “Toy Story of Terror!” looks amazing in every way. The color and contrast are striking, which is especially important in this release with all of the darkness and shadows in seemingly every scene. You can see some examples of them in the images above and below. The details are quite nice and black levels are fantastic. I could go on and on about the qualities of the release, but let’s just say that “Toy Story of Terror!” belongs right alongside the amazing releases that Disney-Pixar is known for. The feature is just over 21 minutes, and we really enjoyed watching it with the commentary turned on. We wouldn’t watch it like that every time, but it has so much great information and trivia packed into it.

This is a good time to go back to the first question, which is probably better said as, “Are the Bonus Features on the Blu-ray worth it?” I’ve already answered the question above with a “Yes,” but let’s look at the Bonus Features in a little more detail so you know why. For starters, it includes the “Team of Specialists” bonus that features a behind the scenes showcases on how they put together this “Toy Story” adventure. It’s an entertaining watch with both entertainment and a little education, and something everyone would probably enjoy. There’s the aformentioned commentary and some deleted scenes on the Blu-ray as well. Each of them are good, but we probably enjoyed another Bonus Feature called the “Vintage Toy Commercials” more than all the others combined. They are similar to old television ads, so much so that they are nearly as much fun as the film itself. They can be viewed as acts during the film or separately with Director Introductions. Take a look at the Combat Carl PSA below (we have additional video clips at the bottom of the review). I’d probably enjoy an entire Blu-ray of these — they are simply fun!

“Toy Story of Terror!” is another Disney-Pixar release that we’d highly recommend because of  a great main feature and several Bonus Features that make it a worthy purchase.
