Review: “Pixels” Movie

What it’s about

Pixels is a sci-fi comedy starring Adam Sandler and Kevin James. The movie is about a group of 1980’s arcade game “champions” that team up to stop an alien invasion that has taken the form of classic video game characters.

I had some reservations about the movie before seeing it, as there has been a great deal of negative press surrounding the release. After seeing Pixels, I’m not sure why critics are so harsh about it. Everyone in the theater seemed to enjoy the movie, and really, it’s quite a bit better than what we’ve seen from recent Happy Madison efforts (Jack and Jill, Grown Ups 2, I’m directly looking at you right now). The humor is childish but amusing; the action is good, and there’s lots of video games and 80’s music and nostalgia splashed throughout. If you don’t like those things, then don’t spend your time or money on it, as you will not like it. Perhaps my own exceedingly low expectations are part of the reason that I enjoyed it, but “Pixels” is actually a fun summertime movie.
