There are likely a couple of reasons to purchase a complete season on Blu-ray for a show like Once Upon a Time. Perhaps you haven’t watched the episodes and want to binge watch it, or and maybe you’re a huge fan of the show and want as much information as you can get about it. For either one, Once Upon a Time: The Complete Fourth Season, would be a worthwhile purchase.
If you aren’t familiar with the show, One Upon a Time is an ABC television series that is based on the lives of residents of Storybrooke, a fictional Maine seaside town. The residents are actually characters from classic Disney fairy tales that have been transported to our “real world” and robbed of their memories. As they don’t remember where they are from, or who they really are, each of the residents have identities in Storybooke. The stories can get a bit complicated, so if you haven’t seen the show, I’d encourage you to stop here, grab a couple of copies of the original seasons on Blu-ray, and catch up. It’s worth the time as it’s a great series.
The fourth season of Once Upon a Time is essentially broken into two very different pieces. For the first half of the season, characters from the hit animated film Frozen are introduced. Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Hans, Sven and many more characters are brought to life in Storybrooke. I’m not going to get into specifics, but as Once Upon a Time tends to do, they have a unique twist on the characters that come to Storybrooke, and the same is true for Frozen. In the second half of the season, three new baddies are introduced: Maleficent, Ursula, and Cruella De Vil. The second half is not nearly as on point as the first, as there are many characters and storylines that have been added to the show. I don’t want to give away show spoilers, so instead, let’s look more closely at the Bonus Features on the Blu-ray.
There are 23 episodes in season 4 of Once Upon a Time with a runtime of almost 17 hours. That’s a lot of content. The Blu-ray contains a great deal of Bonus Features as well including Deleted Scenes (Blu-ray exclusive), Defrosting Frozen; Behind The Magic Tour, Three Who Stayed, The Fairest Bloopers of them All and Audio Commentaries (Blu-ray exclusive). The primary focus of the bonus features are to provide fans with some unique information and they do that very well. In particular, the Audio Commentaries, which are a Blu-ray exclusive, are fantastic. Five of the episodes on the Blu-ray are given these commentaries, during which, you get to hear from actors, writers and directors about the episodes. As an example, “A Tale of Two Sisters” was the premiere episode of Season 4. For the audio commentary of that episode, we hear from Jennifer Morrison (Emma Swan) as she provides great insight into Emma, and creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis as they give some great background on bringing Frozen to Once Upon a Time. We really enjoyed all of the commentary and Bonus Features, with the Deleted Scenes being our second favorite.
There’s an enormous amount of content on the Once Upon a Time: The Complete Fourth Season Blu-ray, and we really enjoyed it, as we have the entire series. It was a bit of a surprise as to how much we actually loved the Bonus Features, with the audio commentary being so fantastic. If you are a fan of the series, or just getting started, the Blu-ray is a worthwhile investment in both time and money.
