If you’re like us, you are counting down the days for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” If you are looking for something “Star Wars” related to help you through this time, you really need to check out “Star Wars Rebels.” The entire first season was just released for the series on Blu-ray. We’ll go over why you’ll want to purchase the Blu-ray in a moment, but for now, let’s give you a little background information.
“Star Wars Rebels” is set between “Revenge of the Sith” and “A New Hope.” It follows a new cast of characters that are battling against the Empire. They are beginning what some of your favorite characters will later join, the Rebel Alliance. It’s also fun to see their interactions when they happen to encounter some of the characters you are already familiar with. When it was first announced as a new Disney XD series, we were very anxious to see how it would be. We wondered if it would be as good as “The Clone Wars” cartoon series that had an excellent run of 5 seasons (actually six seasons if you include the final DVD release that included the unaired episodes).
From the first episode, we realized “Star Wars Rebels” was up to the task as a “replacement” for “The Clone Wars.” The word replacement is in quotes as it’s a totally different series with a totally different feel. Rebels has much more humor in it. Also, one of the things that seems to happen when I mention this show to my friends, is that they have not even tried it. They mistakenly believe that it must be a kids show if it’s a cartoon on Disney XD. I have told countless people to just give it a try, and they all enjoy it as much as I have. It’s a show that kids will certainly enjoy, and if you happen to have kids, it’s a great bonus as you get to introduce them to the Star Wars Universe in a way that they’ll absolutely love.
The new characters introduced in “Star Wars Rebels” include Ezra (Taylor Gray), Kanan (Freddie Prinze Jr.), Sabine (Tiya Sicar), Hera (Vanessa Marshall), Zeb (Stephen Blum) and Chopper. As newly introduced, the characters have unique background stories that you’ll learn about as they make their way through the innaugural season. It’s so much fun seeing the new information and locals, but I admit that some of my favorite times in the series include their interactions with “Star Wars” characters we already know and love such as Yoda, Vader, C-3PO, Lando Calrissian, C-3PO and Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin to name a few.
If you are already a fan of “Star Wars,” you’ll definitely want to add the “Star Wars Rebels” Season 1 Blu-ray to add to your collection. It includes all 15 episodes from season 1, and they all look and sound fantastic. If you are just now trying out “Rebels,” you can catch up quickly. I usually like the Bonus Features on Blu-rays and find that they are the real reason to purchase a season. You’ll be happy with the Bonus Features for “Star Wars Rebels” Season 1, as they are definitely worth the purchase price. There are several of the features that really stood out. Let’s start with a Blu-ray exclusive called “Rebels Infiltrates Star Wars Celebration.” It’s a short video of the “Star Wars” convention in Anaheim that occurred in April of 2015. It’s very well done, and if you happened to have attended the event, you’ll appreciate it even more. Another interesting feature is called “Star Wars Rebels: The Ultimate Guide.” It’s a 22-minute recap of the entire first season of the series, narrated by Kanan (Freddie Prinze Jr.). I would not watch this before watching the entire series as this highlights all of the best moments of the first season and would basically be one giant spoiler. My personal favorite is a nice teaser trailer for Season 2 (which actually started on June 20th and will air more episodes in October). I’ll also mention there are a few cool things that are mentioned in this trailer, but I don’t want to give this away until you get to watch it yourself!
Here are the complete list of Bonus Features:
• Rebels Infiltrates Star Wars Celebration (Exclusive to Blu-ray)
• Season One shorts: “The Machine in the Ghost,” “Art Attack,” “Entanglement,” “Property of Ezra Bridger”
• All DVD Bonus (see below)
• Rebels Recon: 14 behind-the-scenes featurettes
• Star Wars Rebels – The Ultimate Guide
• Star Wars Rebels Season 2 – A Look Ahead
This is a must-have purchase for “Star Wars” and “Star Wars Rebels” fans. You get 15 quality episodes that make up the entire first season along with some must-watch Bonus Features. Like another of our favorite Disney XD shows, “Gravity Falls,” “Star Wars Rebels” is simply too good to miss.
